Our high quality teaching is underpinned by our strong research background and our outstanding facilities.
All our established courses are accredited to lead to Chartered status with an appropriate professional institution.
The School’s research was very highly rated in the latest Government Research Assessment Exercise with a high percentage of our research judged to be world-leading. This strong research background underpins our high quality teaching. All undergraduates undertake a research project under the supervision of a member of academic staff.
99% of our graduates were in employment and/or further study six months after graduating with 98% in professional or managerial roles. The average graduate starting salary was £27,000.
We are the UK’s number one university for engineering placements, with over 30% more students on year-long placements than any other university (2015/16 HESA UG Student Record).
All of our undergraduate courses in civil and building engineering provide the option of a paid year working in industry (please note that on some of our sponsored degrees a placement is integral). The School’s close links with industrial partners means we are able to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.
The year in industry can provide many benefits. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate.
Recent companies who have employed our placement students include Balfour Beatty, British Airways, Eurovia, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Sir Robert McAlpine, Skanska, Taylor Woodrow and Tony Gee.
Colleen Liston completed a 12-month internship with Lendlease Construction Europe Limited, and was nominated for a Loughborough University award in recognition of her achievements.
The School enjoys a strong working relationship with industry and many of our students receive sponsorship from major employers. This link with industry is reflected in the practical content of the courses which offer periods of industrial training together with academic study.
Strong School/industry links mean that on many of our courses company sponsorship can be obtained or in some cases is mandatory – please see individual course entries for details.
The School houses its own design studio and computer laboratory. Our large open-plan laboratory includes concrete, geotechnics, strength of materials, hydraulics, structures, surveying, public health and building services engineering laboratories along with support workshops.
