Why Choose Chemical Engineering at Loughborough?
Chemical Engineering at Loughborough is well established and our degrees are highly regarded by employers.
The Department is housed in a well-equipped building with impressive pilot plant laboratories and modern computing facilities. We are particularly proud of our outstanding links with industry, the excellent relations between staff and students, and the fine employment record of our graduates.
Many of our students and staff have won external awards. Students from Loughborough have been awarded a prestigious Salters’ Company prize 17 times in the past 19 years. In addition, three students recently gained Royal Academy of Engineering Leadership Awards.
91% of our employed 2016 graduates are in professional or managerial roles with an average starting salary of £27,000. Most of our graduates are employed by process companies in the oil, gas, water, food and drink, pharmaceutical, plastics and general chemical industries.
Professional placement in industry
We send 30% more students on year-long engineering placements than any other UK university (HESA UG Student Record, 2015/16: Engineering & Technology).
All of our undergraduate courses in chemical engineering provide the option of a paid year working in industry. The School’s close links with industrial partners means we are able to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.
The year in industry is optional but it is strongly encouraged because of the many benefits it can provide. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate.
Recent companies who have employed our placement students include E.On, EDF Energy, Esso Petroleum, ExxonMobil, GE Water, GSK, Heinz, Kraft Cadbury, PepsiCo, Pfizer, Proctor & Gamble, Total and Unilever.
We have been placing students in industry for over 50 years and have close links with a number of industrial sectors including petroleum, gas, plastics, fine chemicals, healthcare, minerals processing, water, nuclear and food.
We are particularly proud of the efficient procedures we have developed for placing students. Not only do students benefit both professionally and academically, but the salary they receive helps to finance their final years of study. The placement year experiences also provide an edge when it comes to securing a job on graduation.
You can participate in overseas placements such as the Erasmus Scheme and other study exchanges to destinations such as Australia, USA and Europe. Find out more about the exciting opportunity to study abroad.
