Progress to a research degree
While a master’s degree is not a pre-requisite for PhD study, many students use their MA, MSc or MRes as a stepping stone to a research degree.
The ideal PhD candidate is not necessarily the highest achieving student, but a student who demonstrates an enquiring mind, and a real enthusiasm for their subject, which they can build upon to develop new knowledge.
A PhD candidate should also be determined, and self-motivated, and enjoy learning new skills alongside focusing on their subject of choice.
Many postgraduate students already demonstrate these traits from their time spent undertaking their master’s degree, so, if it sounds like you, find out more by browsing the opportunities available across our departments.
We also offer some fully-funded studentship projects, which are listed here.
