Visitors can use the Library for reference purposes only unless they join the Library.
The Library also has a variety of different borrowing schemes depending on what type of user wants an external user card.
Graduates of the University may apply for an Alumni User Card free of charge for the first five years. After five years, you can choose to pay either £10 per annum or to make a one-off life membership payment of £100 to continue your membership. Membership enables you to borrow up to eight long/week loans at a time.
Applications can be made in person at the main Enquiry Desk or by contacting the User Services Manager via email or phone (01509) 222353.
Retired members of University staff and permanent staff in the Students Union may apply in writing to the University Librarian for an external borrowing ticket, which is usually provided free of charge. These tickets enable you to borrow up to four long loans at a time for up to four weeks each.
Members of academic staff or research students (i.e. a PhD or MPhil student), full time postgraduates, part-time, distance learning or placement students (undergraduates and taught postgraduates) at a college or university that is a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme can obtain a free external borrowing ticket. Please present your SCONUL Access email (validated by your library) and a valid Staff/Student ID card from your institution to the main Enquiry Desk on the entrance level so that the external ticket can be created. These tickets enable you to borrow up to four long/week loans at a time.
N.B. Band R (full time undergraduate) students can use Library materials for reference purposes, but will not be able to borrow under the SCONUL Access scheme.
Teachers at Loughborough College or the RNIB College can request a staff borrowing ticket without charge on production of an employer's letter of introduction.
Schools may also apply for an external borrowing ticket for £50 + VAT per year.
Companies may apply for an external borrowing ticket for £100 + VAT per year. Additional tickets can be obtained for £50 + VAT per year.
Members of the public over the age of 18 may use the Library free of charge for reference. You will need to sign in at Reception near the entrance on arrival and sign out when leaving the building. N.B. The Library reserves the right to restrict access to external users during peak times.
You can buy an external borrowing card for £50 per year from the Enquiry Desk on the entry level of the Library. These cards enable you to borrow up to four long/week loans at a time for up to four weeks each.
Please note, external borrowing under this scheme is for individual users and it is not available for groups or institutions.
To borrow books, campus partners may apply for a free External User’s Library membership card. You can obtain a membership card from the Enquiry Desk of the University Library.
An External User’s card allows the bearer to borrow up to four long-loan or week-loan items at a time and is issued on an annual basis.
There are only two courses at the College with borrowing rights:
- Sports foundation
- International foundation
The College pays the Library for an external user Library card for students on these courses. This card allows the user to borrow up to 4 long/week loan items at a time. It does not allow them to borrow from our high demand section – no external user can do this (although they can browse the books from this collection).
Process for application: the College sends the Library a list of eligible students for each of these courses at the start of the academic year. When a student asks for a card at the University Library, the list is checked. If their name isn’t on the list, the student needs to get the course convenor/admin officer from these two areas to confirm with the Library whether they should be added. If the name is on the list they are given an address form to complete and an external user card will be created. This takes a couple of minutes per card.
