Re-employing staff post-retirement

It is not permissible to discuss with an employee who is intending to retire any arrangements for them to return to work in any capacity. To do so is likely to be a breach of USS pension regulations and could impact the individuals’ access to their pension and their tax free lump sum.

It is possible to re-employ an individual following their retirement provided that discussions commence after the individual has retired. The normal rules regarding employment apply in this situation. Retired Professors can be awarded the Emeritus Professor title and in certain circumstances, it may be possible to pay an honorarium. Further information is available on the Emeritus Professors/Award of Honorary Titles webpage.
