English Language Support Service

Information for Staff

All students, both home and international, can struggle at times with the academic English and study skills necessary for success on their degree programme. The English Language Support Service aims to help students develop their language and study skills by offering a range of support, face-to-face and online.

We are also able to offer departments guidance on English language exams used to meet entry requirements as well as any other English language support needs students may have.

We run pre-sessional courses to support students who have not yet met the English language requirements set for their academic course, as well as a wide range of in-sessional workshops to support current students.

Online resources

Whether your international students need some help with their academic writing skills, or your home students need some literacy support, we have a range of online support available.

If your international students are looking for help with their academic English, we recommend visiting the Learn module LUA005 Language and Skills Support Resources.

If your home students require support with their academic writing or general grammar and punctuation skills, we recommend the Learn module LUA014 Language and Skills Support Resources (Home Students).

Guest access to all ELSS Learn modules can be arranged by emailing elsu@lboro.ac.uk.

Referrals

If you have a particular concern about an individual student, it may be possible to book an appointment with one of our tutors. Please email elsu@lboro.ac.uk to book an appointment.

Bespoke courses

The English Language Support Service can also provide tailored support within departments, specifically developed to address the needs of students in a particular subject area. These courses may focus on general English and study skills, or on English for specific academic purposes. We can also design parallel English language courses to complement academic modules.

If you would like us to design and deliver a tailored course for students in your department, please contact Henrietta Pocock h.l.pocock@lboro.ac.uk.
