It was the Integrated Industrial Design programme at Loughborough University that allowed me to realise my great interest in the manufacturing and the design process, and having an emphasis on craftsmanship and the ability to solve problems quickly made my academic background more practical.

The programme seamlessly integrates design innovation and practical manufacturing through a detailed course structure, and I appreciated the realistic and pragmatic teaching methodology, which is highly beneficial for future employment prospects. Additionally, the study experience in the UK has made my English skills stand out amongst other candidates.

I received a variety of support from tutors, technicians, and during workshops which had the greatest impact on me. The strong support meant that I was never helpless or confused when facing new design challenges. With their rich manufacturing experience, I was provided with help and support with my final project and personal growth through the evaluation process, followed by suggestions for improvements in the later stages of design.

My final project is aimed at reducing the back pain of professional drummers by redesigning their sitting device. This subject is a fusion of my interest, strengths, and specialities. As a drummer with a background in mechanical engineering and music, the opportunity to integrate and apply my knowledge into a field I am passionate about is what motivates me to persist with this subject.

Following graduation I quickly received employment as a Manufacturing Engineer in a Fortune 500 company, SLB (Schlemberger) and I am supporting with the manufacture of a product line in Shanghai, China.

My advice for future international students is to communicate frequently with classmates and tutors, and that University is never the only place to learn and experience. Expose yourself to the outside world. Whenever you spot an opportunity that ignites your passion, don’t hesitate to grab it.
