Experimental Officer

Responsibilities

Background

Keith graduated from Loughborough University in 1999 with a BSc.(Hons) in Physics and Mathematics. He continued his studies at Loughborough and gained his PhD in 2004. He joined the University as a member of the Institute of Surface Science and Technology (ISST) which was later integrated within the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering (IPTME), now the Department of Materials. He held various post doctoral positions, focussing on the surface pre-treatment and electro-deposition of coatings on aluminium alloys.

His current role of Experimental Officer involves supporting research and teaching across the department and wider School/University and managing external consultancy within the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC).

Outline of main research interests

  • Applied analytical techniques in materials characterisation
  • Application of electron microscopy and related analytical techniques including EDS and EBSD.
  • Application of X-ray diffraction
  • Surface pre-treatment of aluminium alloys in aerospace applications
  • Interfacial surface free energy

Experimental Officer

Responsibilities

Profile

Professional Society Membership: Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society

Outline of main research interests

  • Application of advanced electron microscopy and associated analytical techniques to the characterisation of a range of nano-structured materials. These have included:
  • Interface and surface analysis of nanoscale multilayer TiAlN/ VN (super-hard) and C/CrC (low-friction) coatings for dry high speed cutting tools using spherical aberration corrected atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy.
  • Valence status characterisation of functional ceramics (LiNiO, LiCoMnO, sol-gel PbZrTiO 3 thin films) using X-ray diffraction and TEM/electron energy-loss spectroscopy.
