Determining the Dates of the Academic Year and Semesters within the Academic Year

(Version effective from 17 June 2020)

  1. Each Academic Year shall be made up of three semesters which shall be known as Semester One, Semester Two and Semester Three. Semester One and Semester Two shall be of at least fifteen weeks. The duration of Semester Three shall be such that the Academic Year is of 12 calendar months in total duration.
  2. There shall be four terms. Terms shall be known as the Autumn Term, Spring Term, Summer Term and Term Four.
  3. Semester One shall begin on the first Monday of the Academic Year. Semester Two shall commence immediately after the end of Semester One. Semester Three shall commence immediately after the end of Semester Two.
  4. The Autumn Term shall commence on the first Monday of Semester One and shall provide eleven weeks prior to the Christmas vacation. It will end on the last teaching day before the Christmas vacation; the Spring Term shall commence on the first teaching day after the Christmas Vacation and end on the last teaching day before the Easter Vacation; the Summer Term shall commence on the first teaching day after the Easter Vacation and end on the same day as Semester Two. Term Four shall commence and end on the same days as Semester Three.
  5. Semesters and Terms shall normally commence on a Monday and end on a Friday.
  6. The last teaching day before the Christmas vacation shall normally be the penultimate Friday before Christmas Day.
  7. Senate shall prescribe the dates of the Academic Year and the dates of the Semesters and Terms within the Academic Year. These will be published by the Academic Registrar in well in advance of the academic year concerned.
