The research in the Department is multidisciplinary and covers a wide variety of topics from the social sciences. We pride ourselves on the high quality of our research and the ways in which that research feeds directly into undergraduate and postgraduate teaching inspiring a new generation of social scientists. Our aim is to produce both fundamental and applied research of exceptional quality. We use a diversity of methods for data gathering and analysis, but our department has a particularly strong international reputation when it comes to the application of inductive and qualitative research methods.

The results of the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014 place the Department of Social Sciences as one of the best social sciences departments in the UK and thus as a world-leading department:
