Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I chose Loughborough University because of their high student satisfaction and graduate employment rates. The campus is the best you are likely to see and has exceptional facilities, both academic and non-academic. I found that the lecturers at Loughborough were passionate about the subjects they teach and were always happy to offer support if needed.

What made you choose to study Maths?

I always knew that I wanted to study Maths at university. I enjoyed problem solving and always found it rewarding when I found the solution. However, I always sought a greater challenge. The mathematics course at Loughborough University has provided me with that challenge, pushing my analytical skills whilst also developing my ability to communicate mathematics to others.

Did you come on an open day and/or applicant visit day? If so, how did that influence your decision to study at Loughborough?

My visit to Loughborough University on their open day cemented my decision to study there. The reason behind Loughborough’s high student satisfaction rate became clear after having the opportunity to speak to the current students who were eager to show off their university. The sample lecture was easily the best I had attended due to an eager and animated lecturer. Aside from this, the open day was the first time I got to see Loughborough’s beautiful campus and I knew that I wanted to spend the next 4 years here.

What do you enjoy most about being a Loughborough student?

Loughborough has an incredible sense of community, and its social atmosphere is one of its shining qualities. With so many societies and sports available I can get stuck into as much as possible, making new friends with each new thing you try. There’s is something for everyone here and so there’s also a group of people for everyone here too. After just two years here it is difficult to go for a walk without accidentally bumping into a friend.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I love how challenging my course is. If you are considering studying maths at Loughborough, there is a good chance you have found maths easy so far. For me this stopped at university. While having this challenge was difficult, it helped my mathematical skills grow much more quickly. I think I must have learnt more in a month studying maths at university than a year in school.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying Maths at Loughborough?

If you are considering studying Maths at Loughborough, I’d suggest finding out what modules you will be taking in your first year and starting to research them a little. You will be covering topics that you will likely have never seen before so you should seize any advantage that you can.

Also don’t hesitate to make use of the help that is available to you. Not just from your lecturers, personal tutor, and the excellent Mathematics Learning Support Centre, but also from your fellow students. You will find that different students are better at different modules. I personally enjoyed computational modules whereas others may excel at mechanics. If you all collaborate, you will each have a better understanding of the modules you struggle with.

Also don’t forget to enjoy your time at university. Setting some time aside for societies, sports and your social life will leave you more motivated when it comes to your studies.

What do you think about the Maths facilities at Loughborough?

The highlight of the Maths facilities at Loughborough is their accessibility. The Schofield Building provides maths students with 24/7 access to group study areas as well as computer labs with everything you could possibly need. The lecturers’ offices can also be found in the same building and have specific office hours if you need any help with their modules. The Mathematics Learning Support Centre is also available to any student, especially those who are struggling to transition from A-level to university.

Aside from within the Maths Department, Loughborough university offers several services such as the Careers Centre and Pilkington Library, which can be used both as a study space which is open 24/7 during the exam periods and houses every textbook you may need during your studies.

What are your plans for the future?

I am currently considering a career in investment banking. To decide if this career is right for me, I have been applying for several internships including at well-known firms such as Goldman Sachs and BlackRock. Having such an internship would help me stand out when I apply for a graduate role. Now that I am entering my 3rd year, I can choose from a wide array of modules allowing me to specialise in financial mathematics modules which will better prepare me for my internship as well as life after university.
