Mathematics

I was attracted to the university by the standard of teaching and the amount of additional support available in both academic and non-academic aspects.

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I chose Loughborough University because the campus felt friendly and was somewhere I could see myself studying. Also, on the open day everyone I met was friendly and the presentations were clear, concise and coherent. Overall it seemed like a professional and inspiring atmosphere to be completing my degree in.

What attracted you the Loughborough in the first place?

I was attracted to the university's standard of teaching and the amount of additional support available in both academic and non-academic areas.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy the wide variety of modules available to mathematics students because they give me chance to explore different areas of the subject. This helps with deciding on what I want to do in the future.

What do you think about the teaching quality and facilities?

The quality of teaching at Loughborough is amazing; I cannot praise it highly enough! Lecturers and all members of staff are friendly and willing to give up their time. They go above and beyond to ensure you are happy with the content of the course as well as happy outside of lectures.

The lectures are interactive with many opportunities to ask questions and the resources are available before and after the lectures (such as recommended reading, lecture notes and recorded lectures.)

Do you have a particular favourite project/module on your course?

I particularly enjoyed one of my first year modules called Computer Applications in Mathematics because it was so different to anything I had done before. In this module we were introduced to the programmes Matlab and Maple where we learnt some programming language that allowed us to plot graphs and do various different calculations.

What kind of support have you had in the Department and from the University?

I have received a great amount of support from my personal tutor, especially in my first year. In weekly meetings with him we’d go through problem sheets with 6 other people from my course - we all felt comfortable in these meetings asking for things to be explained that we might not have quite grasped in the lectures. Meeting with him every week also meant that he got to know us well and we all felt comfortable turning to him for support with non-academic things - he became like our university dad!

The support available in the Mathematics Learning Support Centre is well organised and the staff always make you feel welcome. It is more like a classroom so getting help there from lecturers seems far more casual then dropping by their offices or asking in a lecture.

What are some the exciting things you can do on your course?

You can go and work in industry for a year, or even study at a university abroad. Departmental sport is a fun way to meet other people from your course too!

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I hope to become an actuary once I graduate from Loughborough University. My degree will help me because I have chosen statistics and finance related modules, which are desirable skills in actuarial work.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

I didn’t know what I wanted to do before I came to university or if I even wanted to go, but it was the best decision I've made. I love Loughborough and my course and I’m so glad I decided to come to university here.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

Everyone I have met here since starting my degree has been very friendly. People are always smiling and everyone seems to be having fun. You'll always see familiar faces around campus but there are plenty of new people to meet too.

What do you enjoy most about being a Loughborough University student?

Being a Loughborough student is the best thing ever! Every time someone asks me I feel proud to say I’m a student at Loughborough University. I enjoy being independent but feeling like I always belong somewhere. I love all the friends I’ve made - my flat mates are like family to me and I've got some amazing memories here.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Loughborough has inspired me massively. Every day I feel inspired to aim higher, believe in myself and to feel like I can do anything I set my mind to.
