Materials students enjoy a generous amount of hands-on practical work and this involves a lot of specialist equipment and laboratory spaces. Recent investments in our own building and STEMLab have given us exceptional facilities for our students. Equipment and virtual tours in the Materials building (S-Building)

S Building is home to the Departments of Materials and Chemical Engineering and contains some of the cutting-edge, specialist laboratory and processing facilities these departments use in their teaching. It is also where the majority of our academic staff and research facilities are based.

This newly constructed mezzanine floor facility houses a range of testing and computer simulation facilities that compliment our processing laboratory below.

Equipped with a range of industrial and pilot scale polymer processing machinery this is one of the best facilities of its kind at a UK university and teaches the processing technology that lies behind the majority of plastic objects and components in today's world.

Computer laboratory S0.06

In our IT labs Materials students learn about many aspects of engineering where specialist software packages are used to design, model and simulate. In the real world this helps the modern engineer get to the right answer faster and with more certainty.

Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre

The Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC) is a truly world-class facility and brings together cutting edge microscopy, surface analysis and testing equipment coupled with a team of highly respected and very experienced scientists and engineers. Occupying a discrete section in the Materials building (S-Building), its facilities are used for teaching of students, research and contract and consultancy work for many well-known industrial companies.
