Yifei Zhang

I did my undergraduate degree at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China and came to Loughborough as part of the Loughborough-China Materials Partnership Programme.

I had a very enjoyable time here as a LCMP student, and subsequently an MSc student, which is why I decided to stay at Loughborough to do my PhD. As an engineering department, Materials offered not only advanced research facilities, but also a very friendly environment, especially for international students which really helped me to settle into student life in the UK.

My PhD project is based on the processing of nano-ceramic materials via a novel spray-freeze drying technique. Part of this project has been developed by our research group and my task is to improve the production efficiency and to optimise the process.

Being a PhD student in the Department has been a great experience so far, as I can focus on my research on a full-time basis but also get involved in all sorts of departmental activities. My supervisors are very supportive and have given me some excellent suggestions for my research work. I’ve really enjoyed my project and so I am considering continuing in a research career after I have finished my PhD.
