Shaghayegh Ghanizadeh

I first came to the UK to study an MSc in nanoengineering after having completed my undergraduate degree in my home country of Iran. I decided I wanted to do a PhD and chose Loughborough because of its international reputation for high quality teaching and research and the outstanding student experience that the University offers. The Department of Materials also has strong links with industry which made it appealing.

At Loughborough you are instantly mixed with people from all over the world and you hardly ever feel like a “foreigner.” My social life is very colourful as there are so many opportunities to make friends. I often go out with the other PhD students in my office and we have a great time together.

My PhD project focuses on the synthesis of nanocrystalline α- and transition-alumina powders with particle size <100 nm and controlled morphology through various synthesizing routes. Studying at PhD level is definitely more than just learning about science; it is a chance for you to develop lots of skills such as lateral thinking, time management, team work, creative thinking and how to work under pressure.

In the future I hope to become a research associate and ultimately become a lecturer in a university either in the UK or my own country.
