Saranya Venugopal

After doing my MSc in Materials Science in my home country of India I decided to undertake a PhD at Loughborough. The close links with industry and internationally recognised research capabilities and facilities available in the Department of Materials were a big attraction.

My PhD project is based around coatings of Ultra High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC) like HfB2 and HfC on carbon-carbon composite, in particular focusing on the use of low temperature sol-gel coating to provide oxidation protection prior to further processing. The project is in collaboration with Airforce Research Laboratories (AFRL) in Ohio and is also sponsored by DSTL (Defence Science & Technology Laboratory) in the UK.

The skills and experience I have gained during my PhD will help me realise my future plans of working in the field of UHTC research or space-related research for an organisation such as ARFL or ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation.) The training I have received on using hi-tech characterisation instruments will certainly be very beneficial in my research career.

The fact that Loughborough is a single-site campus is very convenient and has allowed me to get involved with several clubs and societies offered by the Students’ Union. I have had the opportunity to play basketball, take a variety of different dance lessons and have even performed on-stage at the Union! The social activities are a chance to meet and interact with people from different countries, make friends and learn about different cultures.
