Why English Matters

The Challenge

  1. Think! Why does English matter to you?
  2. Pick up your phone or camera.
  3. Go to your favourite spot on campus.*
  4. Create your own 30-90 second video on ‘Why English Matters’. We are looking for videos that challenge or engage with traditional perspectives on the study of English, are innovative in the way they bring your narrative to life, or are unique in showing us what English really means to you.
  5. Upload your video and then send us a link to view it by filling in our online form by 17:00 on 7 June 2017.
  6. Find out if you’ve won an iPad Air 2 – it will be awarded to the most creative, original and well executed entry.

Good luck!

*If you can’t get to campus, make sure to tell us where your favourite spot is!

A few examples for inspiration

If you’ve ever studied English at Loughborough, this is your chance to tell people why English matters.

  • Why it’s about more than ink on paper or sitting in a library.
  • Why it goes way beyond literature in England and can shine a light on countries and cultures across the world.
  • Why it matters not just now, but in the past and in the future.
  • Why it has the power to inspire, to shame, to convince and to destroy.

We're looking forward to hearing your 'why'.
