Now an internationally acclaimed centre of research excellence, Loughborough plays a leading role in the development of new knowledge and understanding across all its fields of activity.
Loughborough University is world renowned for the high calibre of research it produces. The campus is home to more than 40 research institutes and centres, and over 100 research groups.
Loughborough’s diverse research strengths are enhanced through six interdisciplinary Research Challenges, which accelerate the delivery of distinctive solutions to regional, national and international issues.
Testament to the quality of research carried out at the University is the award of seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes.
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Loughborough consolidated its position in the premier league of research universities. It is ranked 14th in the UK and 9th among universities in England for research intensity.
At subject level, Loughborough has the largest concentration of world-leading research in sport and exercise sciences, and six other subject areas feature in their national subject top ten.

Commercial potential is at the heart of much of Loughborough University’s activity. It is one of the most prolific universities in the UK for spin out company formation and the campus is home to one of the region’s largest and most sought-after business incubators, Loughborough Innovation Centre, and Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Parks. These enable small and large companies to form lasting links with the University.
Over the years the University has established an international reputation for the breadth of its partnerships with business, public and voluntary organisations, which are the envy of other institutions.
It has long-standing collaborative links with many blue chip companies including adidas, Caterpillar, E.ON, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Rolls-Royce. In the voluntary sector, established partnerships with charities include the British Heart Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and sports organisations include the ECB and Youth Sports Trust.
Among the nationally-significant organisations based on campus are the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre, the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre, the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health and the National Cricket Performance Centre.
