World renowned research

Loughborough University has produced research that matters from its earliest days - work that has a major impact on academic disciplines, public policy, the professions, business and industry.

Now an internationally acclaimed centre of research excellence, Loughborough plays a leading role in the development of new knowledge and understanding across all its fields of activity.

Loughborough University is world renowned for the high calibre of research it produces. The campus is home to more than 40 research institutes and centres, and over 100 research groups.

Loughborough’s diverse research strengths are enhanced through six interdisciplinary Research Challenges, which accelerate the delivery of distinctive solutions to regional, national and international issues.

Prestigious recognition

Testament to the quality of research carried out at the University is the award of seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes.

The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed Loughborough’s position as one of the country’s Top 20 research universities.

Every department was found to be undertaking research that is internationally recognised, with 18% of the research conducted by 10 schools and departments considered to be world-leading.

Rated Number One

Two of our schools and departments: the Design School and the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, were rated number one in the country by The Guardian and the Times Higher Education.

The Times Higher Education also named Loughborough as one of three rising stars among research-intensive universities.

We offer businesses of all sizes a wealth of professional and technical expertise and specialist services to improve competitiveness. 

Over the years we have established strategic partnerships with global industry leaders, which enables Loughborough University research to have a real impact on the world around us.

Commercial potential is at the heart of much of Loughborough University’s activity. It is one of the most prolific universities in the UK for spin out company formation and the campus is home to one of the region’s largest and most sought-after business incubators, Loughborough Innovation Centre, and Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Parks. These enable small and large companies to form lasting links with the University.

Over the years the University has established an international reputation for the breadth of its partnerships with business, industry and commerce, which are the envy of other institutions. It has long-standing collaborative links with many blue-chip companies, including Ford, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, JCB, EON and Lotus. 

Among the nationally-significant organisations based on campus are the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre, the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre, and the European Construction Institute.
