Mary Jiyani is a legal historian and socio-legal scholar specialising in property law and imperial legal history. She holds a DPhil, MSt in Legal Research and a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford.

Prior to joining Loughborough Law School in January 2026, she worked as a Lecturer in Land/Property Law and the University of Kent.

Mary’s research examines power relations and their formulation in law within imperial contexts, with particular attention to property and territorial authority. She explores how legal regimes transformed indigenous communities, and how the enduring effects of colonial governance continue to shape contemporary legal debates.
