With various options and combinations to choose from, there's lots of opportunities for you to create the perfect placement year. No matter which path you take, you'll gain a set of invaluable skills and experiences for your future career.
All our business courses are four years including a placement year, whilst economics students can extend their three year course to four years by adding a placement year. Our returning final year students often tell us how much these opportunities have helped them to apply their learning in practice, build new confidence and skills, and really boost their career prospects.
It’s up to you exactly how you spend your third year. You can do any of the following:
Professional placement
(up to three placements)
We were one of the UK's first business schools to include a year-long placement as a built-in part of our degrees. For you, it means the chance to get some practical experience under your belt, build sought-after skills and get a heads up in the jobs market. Around a third of students typically receive a graduate job offer with their placement employer.
We work with hundreds of organisations worldwide, which means there’s lots of choice for potential placements, and our dedicated Placements Team is here to help you every step of the way.
Study abroad
at one partner university for a year, or two partner universities for six months each
Studying in a different country can take your skills and confidence to a whole new level. It’ll be a chance to stretch yourself, expand your network and confidence, and spend time in another culture. It’s also a great thing to have on your CV to set you apart from other candidates when you’re applying for jobs.

Placement and study abroad
six months on placement and six months studying abroad
Combine one or more professional placements (in the UK or abroad) with studying abroad at one of our partner universities.
You don’t have to decide anything until year two and there’s lots of help from our dedicated placement and study abroad offices.
