Meet Dr Dale Esliger
Dr Dale Esliger is the postgraduate Programme Director for Clinical Exercise Physiology.
By studying on this programme, you will gain a thorough understanding of the crucial role of exercise and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease and the skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise, both as a prescriptive medicine and as preventative therapy.
Over the past eight years, Dale has developed world-class analytical techniques for the objective measurement of physical activity in both experimental models and in large population surveys. His research now strives to apply these new methodologies and/or sensors to gain insight into the amount, intensity, and types of physical activity required for optimal health.
Dr Esliger's expertise is highly demanded. He has been involved with government research groups in five different counties as a consultant and collaborator, utilizing his advanced analytical techniques. He also has experience working in industry, such as Unilever.
Digital health, data science, and novel technologies
"As a passionate and active researcher in the field of Digital Health, I am interested in the skilled deployment of novel digital health technologies (e.g. wearables) to quantify the dose-response relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health."
"Findings from my research are at the heart of the Exercise Testing and Prescription and Strategies for Adherence module that I co-lead. My research aims to robustly measure the dense phenotypes of study populations with a view to developing novel therapeutic paradigms for the prevention and treatment of chronic lifestyle diseases such as obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. My research is therefore interdisciplinary in nature as it intersects traditional Exercise and Health Science disciplines with digital health, data science, and novel technologies."
"This programme is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to work alongside clinicians, practitioners, and policymakers in the management of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions. Graduates have gone on to pursue careers in the allied healthcare professions relating to physical activity and/or clinical exercise physiology, as well as going on to study for a PhD."
Impact of research on your learning
"It's the opportunity to benefit from world-leading research alongside excellent facilities which makes this programme so exciting. Most importantly, you will be learning and gaining insights from the cutting-edge research of our international academic staff throughout your time at the University."
"We hope our programme will give you the knowledge, and the inspiration, you need to succeed."
