This session builds on the Planning an effective search strategy on-demand course and as such it is essentia; participants have completed this before attending the course  Participants will be actively encouraged to use advanced search techniques to develop and refine their search.  The course will explore various search techniques such as keyword, subject heading and citation searching.  Specific techniques to retrieve relevant research will also be investigated.

Finding evidence for your systematic review (In person)

This workshop gives participants the opportunity to evaluate search strategies and conduct an advanced search in a database within the context of a systematic review, resulting in confidence to conduct a comprehensive search.

The NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination define a systematic review as "a review of the evidence on a clearly formulated question that uses systematic an explicit methods to identify, select and crictically appraise relevant primary research, and to extract and analyse data from the studies that are included in the review." The methods used must be reproducible and transparent and the review is conducting in a prescribed way.  This session will explore this methodology ensuring you will be able to construct a strong search strategy including using thesauri and indexes to find to find alternative search terms, and use advanced search techniques tush as phrase and proximity searching, we will discover how to conduct a nested search in a database and how to utilise database options to ensure the search is a comprehensively as possible.  The session will include demonstrations and time to practice searching for information on the participants' own devices. The workshop builds on learning from the 'Planning' and 'Conducting your search' workshops; prior attendance at  these courses is recommended but not essential.

Take time to reflect on the most appropriate dissemination channels and learn about the pros and cons of indicators for measuring success.

This session will highlight the importance of developing an appropriate and effective publishing strategy.  It will demonstrate tools and databases that provide journal information and indicators to help you select the most appropriate vehicles for your research outputs. It will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both the tools and the statistics when measuring impact. Ultimately, it will help you to develop appropriate publication strategies for raising your profile within your own research area.
