Showcase Extras

While the Summer Showcase shone a spotlight on doctoral researchers, the faculty also brought their A-game - contributing a handpicked mix of sessions designed to surprise, inspire and entertain.

Beam Me Up!

Attendees were treated to a captivating glimpse into the future of communication as life-sized holograms of colleagues appeared before their eyes, sharing powerful insights on leadership and the importance of Safer Partnerships and Trusted Research.

This immersive experience highlighted the real risks posed by those who do not share our values, and why understanding these threats was key to protecting research, the UK’s security, and the university’s global reputation.

It wasn’t just a talk - it was a holographic wake-up call, available throughout the day for attendees to drop in at any time.

Demystifying Dan

Attendees joined us for Demystifying Dan – an insightful session where our Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research & Innovation, Professor Dan Parsons, shared his journey from research novice to doctoral researcher and beyond.

He spoke about the motivations behind his research, the challenges he faced along the way, and how those experiences shaped his current role. Dan also reflected on the vital role doctoral researchers play in driving innovation, enriching academic communities, and contributing to the university’s mission.

Whether attendees were just starting out or deep into their doctorate, the session offered a valuable opportunity to connect, reflect, and be inspired.

Strategic Slide Slam

The Strategic Slide Slam brought the University’s strategy to life in a fast-paced, high-energy session that was both informative and entertaining.

As an exciting new addition to the 2025 Summer Showcase, this dynamic event—drawing inspiration from the spirit of a rap battle (with a scholarly twist!)—featured our Associate Pro Vice-Chancellors, each representing one of the University’s strategic themes.

In just 20 minutes, they took the stage to deliver sharp, engaging 5-minute presentations that:

  • Introduced a key strategic theme
  • Explained why it matters
  • Highlighted how doctoral researchers contribute to its success

It was strategy made real, relevant, and just a little competitive with some mic drop moments- all in the friendliest way possible.

Taking the stage were:

  • Professor Steve Christie – Doctoral College
  • Professor John Downey – Climate Change and Net Zero
  • Professor David Fletcher – Sport, Health and Wellbeing
  • Professor Emily Knightley – Vibrant and Inclusive Communities
