Entry requirements

You must be completing a higher education qualification (TEC, Degree, Masters, PhD) during the academic period 2025 to 2026.

What we would like you to submit

To allow everyone access to your design to make the physical product, we would like you to submit a YouTube video link to a presentation of your design and how to make it. The video should provide the following:

For products

  • A brief description of the purpose of your design, who will use it and its benefits over existing products, using low-fidelity sketch models, Computer Generated Designs, Sketches, Renderings, and simple mechanisms.
  • Scenario of use (how it is used by the player or athlete) through sketches, animation and or real-life role play).
  • Present in a logical order how to make the product, e.g. ordering proprietary components and materials, making equipment (hand tools), cutting, finishing, and assembly, using sketches, and Engineering drawings.
  • Estimate the cost to manufacture.
  • Submit the declaration of originality document, (available following registration), with your YouTube video link, 200 words (maximum) summary, and an image of your design.

Note: The YouTube Video must not be more than four minutes long (240 seconds). Any video that exceeds 260 seconds will not be judged.

What are we looking for?

In each brief we are looking for:

  1. A feasible, novel inclusive solution to the needs of the players and athletes for that game or sport.
  2. Where possible, a viable, low-cost and sustainable materials being used and the design capable of recycling.
  3. A clear communication of the product, it’s benefits to the target users and stakeholders.
  4. A clear summary communication of how to safely make the product using limited resources, tools, facilities, and skills.

Judges

Brief Judges are supported by technical advisors to review the safety and manufacturability of the designs.

Brief A - Angela Lydon
Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP) National Manager, Special Olympics.

Angela has 23 years teaching experience all of them in specialist settings. She has developed expertise in postural management and motor development of children with physical disabilities and believes that every child has a right to access to high quality PE. She was a PE lead in a special school for 10 yrs. She champions inclusion, adaptation and the delivery of genuine equity through personalized teaching and learning.

Brief B - Will Evans
Head of Sport, Boccia England.

A highly experienced, motivated and effective leader in the sport, physical activity, charity, and not-for-profit sectors. I am an influential, optimistic and value-driven leader who creates positive environments, builds effective relationships, and drives outstanding results. With a wealth of experience at senior executive and board levels, I inspire high-performing teams to exceed all performance measures and deliver demonstrable impact at national and local levels.

Brief C - Alasdair Donaldson
Head of Para Sport Loughborough.

I am an experienced sports leader with extensive knowledge of strategic management and delivering success. I possess excellent people engagement, organisational and planning skills that have allowed me to excel in a number of areas including campaign implementation and execution, international team leadership and coaching. My skill-set focuses on developing people and working in partnership with them to develop the skills and experiences to achieve their best.

Brief D – Hannah Moore
Project Activator, Grampian Disability Sport, Scotland.

Hannah works for Sport Aberdeen and Grampian Disability Sport (GDS) as Project Activator for Grampian Inclusive Cycling Bothies and Branch Coordinator for GDS. This has developed her interest in inclusive design and knowledge of adapted cycling. Hannah have a first-class Honours degree in Social and Public Policy at the University of Glasgow. She enjoys spending my time going on sea kayaking, hillwalking or cycling adventures, exploring Scotland and abroad.

Brief E - Brendan Tonks
Chief Executive Officer, CP Sport.

Brendan is the CEO of CP Sport and leads the charity in all aspects of strategic and operational areas. Brendan works closely with the Board of Trustees and provides strong leadership to the CP Team. Brendan is focused on delivering the vision that everyone with Cerebral palsy enjoys a lifetime habit of sport and physical activity.

Brendan has always been hugely passionate about sports, and his work in the youth sector soon evolved into child protection social work. Brendan spent nearly ten years working for CAFCASS as a Children’s Guardian, advocating on behalf of children in the family court. In recent years he moved into the sports sector, working within the governance team at England Golf, before being appointed as a Senior Consultant at the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) at the NSPCC. For the last 18 months Brendan has supported National Governing Bodies, regional Active Partnership networks, and other sport and physical activity organisations with their safeguarding, governance, and compliance. Outside of the work environment, Brendan enjoyed being a board member at an inclusive sports charity, he chairs a local county sports association, and he also volunteers on a further education college strategic safeguarding group. Brendan enjoys learning and thrives in high pressure environments.  

Brief F – Jo Emmett
Head of Performance Programmes, Sport Loughborough.

Jo Emmett is Head of Performance programmes within Loughborough University. Jo came back to study Sports Management at Loughborough University in her mid 20s and has been involved in the University ever since.  She then worked for the Youth Sport Trust on the Gifted & Talent Programme which aimed to help school aged children to balance their study and sport priorities.  Jo joined Loughborough Sport in 2008 as the Education & Development Manager, continuing to aid University students to balance their sport & their studies, and gain life skills.

Jo moved into a strategic manager role in 2010, which has taken many paths but now forms her current role as Head of Performance Programmes.  Jo oversees the ‘off pitch’ aspects of the University performance programmes and the Athletic Union.

Prior to Loughborough Jo did an Economics and German degree at the University of East Anglia and worked at the Bank of England as a banking analyst covering South America.

Rules

Respect and consideration

Entries to the competition must be respectful of the people and community for whom we trying to help. Any material or comments made within your submission that are considered inappropriate will result in the immediate rejection of the submission.

Intellectual Property

As an ‘open source’ design competition, by taking part in the event, you are agreeing to allow your design to be produced by others without reward.

Safety

It is your responsibility to ensure your design is safe to use by your target user. Ensure your design conforms to basic product safety standards and checked by an academic supervisor before submission. If you are suggesting using specific power tools, ensure you make it clear they should only be used by qualified individuals. Any design considered unsafe will be rejected.

Judge’s decision

The judge’s decision is final. There are no appeals, nor justification for rejection or result.
