Sleep in the City

The Sleep in the City project is examining how increasing summer temperatures affect the bedroom environment, our sleep quality, and wellbeing. The research is focussed on flats in London and will help householders improve comfort on summer nights and provide guidance for the builders, owners and occupants of flats.

The project brings together a multi-disciplinary team of sleep scientists, building physicists and experts in user centred design and health. They provide data about the temperatures, noise and air-quality in their bedrooms, and the quality of their sleep. They will test behavioural and physical interventions designed to improve their sleep quality on summer nights.

The team is partnering with social housing providers, local authorities, housing developers and government departments. They will help ensure the work has rapid and effective impact.
