Mentoring
Several Loughborough University staff support academics and students at risk through formal and informal mentoring arrangements, both within Loughborough and beyond. Formal mentoring schemes we contribute to include the Cara mentoring scheme and the Mentoring Scheme for Ukraine.
Cara Mentoring Scheme
The UK’s Council for At-Risk Academics runs a mentoring scheme which relies on academic and professional volunteers who offer advice and support in a range of areas, including discipline-based and regional advice, as well as professional expertise. Prospective mentors are offered training and matched with mentees.
Mentoring scheme for Ukraine
This scheme is run by volunteers from Science for Ukraine-UK and was developed as part of the rapid response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the aim to support Ukrainian colleagues with navigating UK academia. Mentors are expected to be able to help Ukrainian colleagues with professional activities such as career planning; networking & profile building; learning about the UK academic culture, publication process & academic writing; or securing research funding (UK- funders only). In the scheme, mentees are matched to a mentor of an appropriate career stage and from a similar discipline.
Prospective mentors are kindly asked to contact the organisers of this scheme.
