Academic/Professional Background:

  • 2014 - 2018: PhD researcher at AMRG Loughborough University, UK.
  • 2008 - 2013: Diploma (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

Summary/Biography:

Alkaios Bournias-Varotsis acquired his Diploma (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering with distinction, from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 2013. His final year thesis focused on the analysis and design of a powder deposition mechanism used in an experimental selective laser sintering setup.

In the meantime, Alkaios worked as a Research Assistant intern in Aalto University, Finland for, developing an educational mechatronic platform for school students and was an active member of the voluntary student organisation BEST (Board of European Students of Technology), acquiring leadership roles in his local group.

He joined the AMRG in the Wolfson School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University to undertake a full time PhD in 2014 working on developing new manufacturing methodologies for embedding electronic circuits in metal objects by Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing.

Research Interests:

  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Ultrasonic Consolidation
  • Printed Electronics
  • Engineering Design

Research Projects:

Alkaios is a part of team working on solid-state additive manufacture of novel multi-functional metal matrix composites by Ultrasonic Consolidation. The aim of the project is to realise an entirely new realm of multifunctional components by freeform integration of electrical circuitry within dense metal components processed in the solid-state. He is supervised by Dr. Ross Friel.
