Technical research and development

Sat Dishes

We have a long tradition of working with external organizations to develop research to meet real-world challenges, and we are part of as university that we carries out over three times the national average of collaborative research.  We have developed mutually beneficial partnerships with multi-nationals, small to medium-sized enterprises and charities.

From its earliest days the Centre has produced research that matters, driven not only by the highest levels of intellectual curiosity and achievement, but also by the need for solutions to immediate problems in industrial practice.

The two main areas of our expertise are

Antennas for Integrated Communication Systems

We are leading researchers in the simulation, design and measurement of antennas for wireless communications.  Typically we can provide help and expertise in the areas of mobile device solutions for GSM, 3G, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth and FM. Our comprehensive range of state of the art electromagnetic simulation software, dedicated measurement facilities, cutting edge workshops and knowledge networking allows us to produce quick and effective contributions to technical research and development.

Since they are now so close to humans, mobile phones and the base stations they connect need to be characterized by comparison to complicated standards. Over the past decade the centre has established itself as a leader in providing help in test and measurement for mobile communications engineering.

Wireless solutions for telemetry and sensing.

Mobile communications isn’t just about phones. These days the monitoring of an offshore wind turbine or a leak on a remote damn may both call for wireless solutions. Some applications may be safety critical and others may be cost critical. CMCR has expertise in characterising wireless solutions designed to deliver telemetry from mobile platforms or telemetry data from static remote objects.
