Jack’s incredible journey began on 2 May at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, where in the past he had received life-saving cancer treatment. His run concluded at Loughborough campus on 5 May where he was welcomed by friends and supporters.
Diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 16, Jack underwent chemotherapy and three surgeries before being declared cancer-free in 2022.
Despite being warned by doctors that he might never compete in sports again, Jack began running to regain his fitness. His determination led him to complete the London Marathon in April 2024, raising £5,680 for Teenage Cancer Trust. Inspired by the impact of his fundraising, Jack decided to take on an even greater challenge.
Jack began training for the ultramarathon in January, spending long hours running every week as well as cycling and working out in the gym. Jack reflected: “It was very difficult but amazing balancing these training commitments, my degree and playing semi-professional rugby for Bedford Tigers.
“The ultramarathon was incredibly tough, but I am so grateful for all the support across the weekend. The first day was a huge test, running in the scorching heat. Heading into the third day, we discovered I had multiple stress fractures in my foot, making days three and four physically difficult. I had to keep reminding myself of why I was doing it and who I was running for.
“At points I thought I would struggle to get to the finish line but the pain I went through is nothing compared to what thousands of young people are facing up and down the country every day.
“I want to say a massive thank you to my fellow Loughborough students who supported me during the challenge, particularly my support crew: Matt Strong, Patrick Welsh, Niall Corcoran, Olly Mills and Louix Wes.”
Jack's ultramarathon has raised over £11,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust and has helped to increase awareness of testicular cancer.
Jack is due to graduate from the University in 2027 and plans to continue to help raise awareness and funds for Teenage Cancer Trust in the future.
