Professor Rajkumar Roy has been appointed Dean of the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, while Professor Moataz Attallah will take up the role of Dean of the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering (AACME).

Professor Roy joins Loughborough from City St George’s, University of London, where he is currently Executive Dean of the School of Science & Technology. He previously held a range of senior positions at Cranfield University, including Director of Manufacturing and Professor of Competitive Design.

An internationally recognised expert in through-life engineering, Professor Roy is renowned for developing its scientific foundations. At Cranfield, he established the Centre for Design (C4D), an interdisciplinary hub uniting art-based product design, computer science, engineering, materials science, and management to develop innovative, socially impactful solutions. He is a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineers (CIRP), the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

He brings to Loughborough extensive experience in engineering research and higher education leadership.

Professor Attallah joins from the University of Birmingham, where he is the Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer. He is a globally recognised authority in advanced manufacturing, with particular expertise in additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, and materials for extreme environments.

Over the course of his career, Professor Attallah has led major interdisciplinary research initiatives, forged strong industrial collaborations, and driven innovation in sustainable manufacturing. He has secured significant funding for transformative work in net-zero technologies, nuclear fusion, and aerospace materials.

He also brings a deep commitment to mentoring early career researchers, advancing diversity in STEM, and aligning academic research with pressing national and global challenges.

Speaking about the new appointments the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Jennings, said: “We are excited to welcome Professors Roy and Attallah to Loughborough. Engineering has been at the heart of the University since it was first established, and the extensive experience and passion they both bring will ensure it continues to excel and progress.”
