BUCS Big Wednesday receives a Royal seal of approval
Loughborough University has staged a fitting finale for this year’s BUCS Big Wednesday, which included a Royal visit.
British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Patron HRH the Princess Royal was on campus yesterday to hand out medals at the men’s hockey trophy final, and watch the men’s volleyball and women’s lacrosse championship matches.
At the lacrosse, in which Loughborough Students were defeated 12-8 by Durham, the Princess Royal also met with students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who played in Sunday’s trans-Atlantic varsity fixture.
Women’s Basketball was one of three Loughborough teams to claim Championships on BUCS Big Wednesday with a 66-55 victory over Northumbria.
Badminton continued their dominance of BUCS with victories for the men 5-3 against Bath and the women 8-0 to defeat Leeds.
But there was disappointment for the huge home support gathered at the Waterbase hockey pitch with the women’s team defeated 1-0 by Birmingham, followed by the men who were denied by Nottingham 3-2 on penalty flicks after the match ended 1-1 after full time.
On Trophy Tuesday men’s table tennis defeated UCL 9-5 and women’s badminton overcame Bath 5-0 to give Loughborough a total of five titles.
