Have you ever thought about translating your research into a comic? Or ever thought about using comics as a creative method to gather data? Comics present an opportunity to make research more participatory, to gather new and unexpected data, to create more ethical representations of participants and their contexts, and to release your creativity.

Join the IAS for a hybrid workshop with IAS Residential Fellow Dr Gemma Sou, the author of 'How to Translate Research into a Comic: Examples from Disaster Scholarship' paper, recently published in the Journal of Disaster Studies (JDS).

Gemma will be joined by Dr Oliver Hooper, Dr Karen Sung and Richard Johnson, whose research and practice also incorporate comics, to discuss the language and conventions of comics, how to decide which findings to communicate, writing the script, choosing and working with an illustrator, participatory scripting, and developing characters.

You will also have an opportunity to create your own comic (or at least part of one!). Ultimately, in this workshop, you can explore how to think visually and how to communicate research visually, rather than how to draw.

The workshop is co-hosted by the Journal of Disaster Studies and Loughborough University’s Institute of Advanced Studies.

Arrivals from 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start.
