Grandma Flew Spitfires Public Talk

A pilot in the 1940s entering the cockpit of a Spitfire

The almost unbelievable story of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) from its very beginnings as a piece of British improvisation to a well-oiled machine. Its male and female amateur pilots ferried over 300,000 aircraft, enabling the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Fleet Air Arm to fight the war in the air. The talk is illustrated with many photos from the ATA Museum collection and punctuated with personal anecdotes from many of the ATA veterans whom event host Richard met and interviewed.
