Building Belonging: A Conversation on Islamophobia

Open to all staff and students, this roundtable offers an opportunity to explore the impact of Islamophobia in higher education and consider how we can work together to create a more inclusive university community.

Join us to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue, challenging assumptions and reflecting on the role each of us can play in fostering a culture where Muslim students and colleagues feel respected, supported, heard and included.

The conversation will be led by Professor Line Nyhagen (Sociology), Ustada Safra Razeek (Muslim Chaplain), Emily Segaran (EDI Services) and Hamna Khan (ISoc President).

Discussion topics will include:

What is Islamophobia, and why does it matter in higher education?

• Common misconceptions and stereotypes about Muslims;
• The impact of Islamophobia on students' wellbeing, sense of belonging and academic experience;
• How universities can create more inclusive environments;
• Practical ways staff and students can be effective allies.
