University turns red in support of Poppy Appeal

Loughborough University is lighting up two of its iconic buildings in support of the Poppy Appeal.

The Hazlerigg and Rutland buildings on campus are being automatically lit up each evening using red floodlights, in the lead up to Remembrance Day, 11 November.

The project is part of a wider initiative organised by Leicestershire’s WW1 Reference Group with the support of Leicestershire and Rutland Royal British Legion and The Leicestershire Lieutenancy Office.

The group ran a similar project last year to mark the centenary of the First World War. Following its success, they have invited more organisations this year to help relay and spread the simple but eye-catching message.

Andrew Burgess, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, said: “We’re delighted to be part of such an innovative project which is also supporting a truly fantastic cause.

“On Remembrance Day, we take time out to honour and think of those who served for our country. The illumination is the perfect way to mark respect and act as a reminder to people as they walk by.

“As well as illuminating the University buildings, we have also launched our own Poppy Tribute on campus this year inviting people to purchase a poppy and leave a message to create our own field of remembrance, similar to the one at the Tower of London last year. We’re extremely pleased to be doing a variety of things in support of Remembrance Day this year.”

The Hazlerigg and Rutland building will be automatically illuminated from 5pm everyday in the run up to and on 11 November.
