About the School of Design and Creative Arts

The School of Design and Creative Arts at Loughborough University brings together broad expertise across a multitude of art and design disciplines. We are proud to be ranked 1st in the UK for Fashion and Textiles, and 2nd for Graphic Design (The Guardian University Guide 2025). We are also 3rd in the UK for Art and Design (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and The Complete University Guide 2025) and top 10 in the UK for Product Design, plus we rank 39th in the World for Art and Design (QS World Rankings by Subject 2025.)

Our School of Design & Creative Arts (SDCA) is home to a warm and vibrant community of 80 academic staff, 70 specialist support academics and 50 doctoral researchers together with 60 members of professional services and technical staff.

Research within the School of Design and Creative Arts has significant impact and aims to tackle a huge variety of real-world, global issues affecting lives across the planet. It stretches across a broad spectrum of expertise spanning Design, Creative Arts and Human Factors, and is characterised by transdisciplinary and collaborative working within the school, across the wider University, and alongside industry specialists. With expertise in numerous disciplines, we are proud that 100% of research impact in Art & Design is rated as “World Leading” or “Internationally Excellent” (REF2021).

We deliver a world-class education in design and creative arts, developing high-quality graduates who are leading practitioners in their field. Our vision is to educate students to become responsive, persuasive innovators of change, able to instigate creative, intelligent responses to a variety of contemporary challenges. With almost 2000 taught students in the school, (over 1700 undergraduate and over 200 postgraduate) the school is a thriving, exciting and dynamic place to study.

We are based within state-of-the-art facilities, including a purpose-built, £21M Design building housing industry-specification machinery; purpose-built teaching areas and specialist laboratories; design studios; computer and prototyping suits; and areas for display and interaction. There are also six specialist facility areas across the school, covering creative digital technologies and photography; print, dye, weave, stitch, and digital embroidery; metals, plastics, wood, and laser; painting and printmaking; ceramics and mould making; and performance and rehearsal spaces.
