Hate crime

Hate crime is a particularly harmful form of criminal behaviour that has significant impact upon students subject to these crimes, their families and wider communities.

Think

  • Acknowledge how difficult the situation is, that hate crime can cause a range of emotions which are understandable.
  • Show support and avoid blaming them or being judgemental.

Listen

  • Listen to the student, reassure that they are not alone and will be listened to.
  • Encourage to express feelings and allow the student to make their own decisions.

There are a range of support options available

Local services including Victim First can offer emotional and practical advice including safety.

Students can report hate crime online to Leicestershire Police or to Leicestershire County Council.

Student Services adviser can support with safety, mitigating circumstances alongside emotional and practical support, access by reporting online.

If the perpetrator is another student we can talk through the disciplinary process.
