Honorary Graduates

Loughborough University celebrates members of its internal and wider community working to Create Better Futures through two honorary awards.

All members of the Loughborough Community can annually nominate exceptional individuals to receive either the University Medal or an Honorary Degree. Nominations are open now with a deadline of 13 February, 2023.

The deadline for future nominations will be 24 April 2023.

University Medal

Our vision for University Medallists is to celebrate the very best of the Loughborough community. The University medal is the most prestigious honour that the University can award. Only a small number are given out each year and they are normally presented at a Graduation Ceremony.


A University Medal is available to any member of the University community which includes staff, students and other contributors to the community.


A University Medal would be awarded for one or more of the following:

  • Significantly enhancing the University’s reputation in the UK and / or globally
  • Significant and lasting impact in line with the institutional themes of the University’s strategy
  • Significant voluntary service in line with the University’s values
  • Measurable impact on our community or their field of work, with a specific focus on Sustainability and Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI)
  • Significant and positive impact on the sporting or student environment
  • Acts of bravery, courage, and selflessness

Honorary Degree

Our vision for Honorary Degrees is to team up with changemakers across the globe.


Loughborough University bestows Honorary Degrees on high-profile individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to fields the University has close links with.

Areas of contribution could be any academic, business or professional service area, or of particular relevance to the University’s values and strategic vision


Criteria would include:

  • High profile, exceptional candidates who have made a substantial contribution to their chosen field whether that be industry, education, research, culture, Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI), sustainability, society or other public service.
  • An outstanding and inspirational example of achievement to the University entire community.  
  • Enhance the University's academic or general reputation; and
  • Have the potential to act as a champion and supporter of the University in an ongoing capacity.
