Rakhee Patel, EDI Officer for Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation

I’m Rakhee and I am one of the two EDI Officers at Loughborough University. I work with a specialism in sex, gender and sexual orientation to move to the institution towards equitable practices in these areas. Working closely with my colleagues in EDI Services, I take an intersectional approach to dismantling systems of oppression.

I hold particular expertise in the Athena Swan Charter with responsibilities including, facilitating the implementation of the institutional Athena Swan action plan 2023-2028 and providing guidance to Schools on award applications. As secretary to the institutional Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team and the Transgender and Non-Binary Working Group, I progress solutions via the EDI governance structure, liaising with stakeholders across the University to ensure a joined-up approach to equity in the areas of sex, gender and sexual orientation.

I have a background in student facing roles, having worked within Diversity and Inclusion in the Student Succes Academy and as Placement Officer for the School of Science. Before working at the University, I was a resident blogger, writing about personal experiences of disability, and a volunteer for a disability-related charity.
