Emily Segaran, EDI Officer for Race, Religion & Belief and International
I’m Emily and I am the EDI Officer for Race, Religion & Belief and International. My role is to support staff and students across the University with their work addressing inequalities in these areas. This includes facilitating the delivery of our Race Equality Action plan; delivering training and workshops; organising events; supporting staff networks and much more. I am also Events Lead for the LGBT+ Staff Network.
I joined Loughborough University in November 2022 as EDI Coordinator. Before that, I worked at York St John University, first in International Student Support and then in Widening Participation. I graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2011 and returned to education in 2019 to do my PGCE at The University of York. Although I decided that teaching wasn’t for me, that experience led me to working in higher education and to the world of EDI.
I love that my job allows me to constantly meet new people and hear about the amazing work going on around the University. My previous work and my lived experience have given me resilience, perspective, and empathy. In my work as well as my personal life, I am committed to learn from others, to challenge myself and others, and to remove barriers so that everyone in our community can thrive. As we work towards becoming a more equitable, diverse and inclusive institution, we must embed anti-discriminatory practice into everything we do.
