21 January 2025, Inclusive assessment and intended learning outcomes - Curriculum Sprint

This workshop was held to further implement inclusive principles into our assessment practice, the principles of which were agreed at a recent Education and Student Experience Committee (Learning and Teaching Committee) meeting. The workshop was a practical space to use this inclusive lens to consider our own modules and assessments within the programme context and ILOs (intended learning outcomes). The session was led by Enhanced Academic Practice and was aimed at feeding into plans for modules and programmes in the upcoming year.

International Women’s Day 2024

It was a privilege to be invited for lunch with colleagues on Wednesday to mark International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The welcome was warm, and the food was amazing. Several colleagues stepped up to say a few words about their career journeys and experiences. They spoke from the heart with great authenticity, and so we came away hugely encouraged and proud to be part of the School.

Thank you to everyone who made it happen! We continue the theme next week when Mahroo hosts “Celebrating the achievements of Women in Science and Engineering”.

ABCE Family day May 2024

At the end of May 2024, ABCE hosted its first Family day (and as far as we know the first at Loughborough University).

Blending work and family life helps foster a sense of community to all colleagues, which as particularly important at such a busy and stressful time of the year.

The day was full of age-appropriate parallel activities across three age groups.

De Cansu Curgen-Gurpinar, Dr Vivien Chow and Donna led the toddler activities, which included a fun buildings trail (requiring a stop at the Dean’s balloon-filled office, and a movie experience at one of our lecture theatres), dressing up as engineers and building brick and foam walls, and lots of creative art activities with Cansu, some of which still remain in our building.

The older children joined a drone flying experience in the School’s research hub, led by Dr Ashraf El-Hamalawi and Dr Yang Yu, and they were also able to have fun sessions in the VR lab, led by Yang and Dr Karen Blay.

The children also had the opportunity to learn about the importance of water, by using our water pumps, and learn why access to clean water is a privilege (led by Susie Goodall and Rebecca Scott) as well as building hydrogen powered mini cars, and seeing how much more water can offer (led by Sarah Gomes and Mofesola Olaoye).

The day closed with a collective tower building exercise, which brought all age groups together, run by Jonathan Hales and Lee Page.

The event was attended by parents, aunts, and grandparents. Given its success we are excited by the prospect of running it again next year.

The ABCE Family Day was organised and run by Dr Efi Spentzou, supported by Professor Ksenia Chmutina, who both extend their thanks to Yang, Jonathan, Lee, Laura and Nick, who worked hard and responded to all the unusual requests throughout the preparations and on the day.
