Placement year

At Loughborough, a significant percentage of undergraduate students are on placement degree programmes. This period of placement abroad or on industrial or professional training, normally twelve months long, provides you with an opportunity to work as a salaried employee and to earn an additional qualification. Depending on your programme this would be the Diploma in Industrial Studies, the Diploma in Professional Studies, the Diploma in International Studies or the Diploma in Professional Development.

During your second year, you will be invited to secure your placement, with assistance from your School/Department. The placement itself will require you to maintain appropriate records and to submit a report which will be formally assessed. You will be visited from time to time by a member of your School/Department. A full description of the programme placement can be found in your Programme Handbook; also see the University's Code of Practice.

Students may also choose to spend time studying abroad during their placement year.

Adding or removing a placement year from your programme

If you wish to add or remove a placement year from your programme, you should contact your School at the earliest possible time. You are also advised to seek guidance from the Student Advice and Support Service regarding how changing your studies may affect your financial circumstances (including student loan), immigration status and/or accommodation. If you hold a Tier 4 visa, you should be aware that you will need to return to your home country to apply for a new visa before adding a placement year.

If you do get agreement to add or remove a placement year, you will need to complete a Route Change request form. Students in the following Schools must use the new pilot system to submit their Route Change request (see below):

  • Loughborough Design School
  • School of Science
  • School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences
  • School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

For students in other Schools, the new system for submitting Route Change requests will be made available during 2017/18 once the pilot has been completed. In the meantime, your School will be able to provide you with a copy of the form and give you advice on how to complete it. Alternatively, the form can be downloaded below but will not be processed until all the relevant staff have seen and signed the request. Your completed form should be returned to:

Student Office
Rutland Building
Loughborough University
Loughborough, Leicestershire
LE11 3TU

Or by email to studentenquiries@lboro.ac.uk

If you are required to apply for a new Tier 4 visa, you will need to have obtained this before your record is updated and you can commence your placement year.

Pilot system – 2017/18

Students in the following Schools will now use the new pilot system to submit their Route Change request to add or remove their placement year:

  • Loughborough Design School
  • School of Science
  • School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences
  • School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

This new system is part of a range of developments the University will be making over the next few years to improve the student experience. The system is currently being piloted with the above four Schools and will be rolled out to the rest of the University throughout the 2017/18 academic year. Students in other Schools should use the above form in the meantime.

The system offers a much easier and quicker way for you to submit your Route Change request, provides automated notifications at relevant points in the process and will improve the speed with which your request is completed.

To submit a request through the new system, please log in to Student Self-Service  and click on the “My Requests” tab.

We’d value your feedback on the new system. You will therefore be asked to complete a brief online questionnaire once your Route Change request has been processed.
