Shepshed Toy Library expands Story Sacks with donation

17 May 2018

Shepshed Toy Library (STL) has expanded their ‘story sacks’, with help from the Community Donations Fund.

Earlier in the academic year, STL made a successful application to the University’s Open Fund, which granted the Library £500 to fund 30 new story sacks, on a variety of different topics, from dinosaurs to the weather.

So far, the dedicated volunteers at STL have created 15 new story sacks, with 15 more in production.

The STL is a long established local charity providing a toy loan service and guided stay and play sessions for local families, carers, playgroups and primary schools. Two part time staff and a small team of highly experienced volunteers are able to offer expertise as to age appropriate play items and activities.

Their dedicated playroom is open to everyone and is regularly used by families, childminders and carers, including groups of children from Ashmount School in Loughborough.

One of the most heavily used resources at STL is their collection of story sacks, which are carefully devised to promote literacy and learning whilst having fun.

A story sack is a large fabric bag containing approximately ten play items. Sacks may be based around a favourite character (like Postman Pat) or explore a particular topic (for example, Starting School). Contents, which can be varied accordingly, would typically include a selection of books to share, jigsaw puzzles, card and board games, soft toys and puppets, and much more.
