Manchester United Academy to play at University

1 October 2012

A ‘Manchester United Academy XI’ will take on Loughborough Students Football on Wednesday 10th October. The Academy is renowned for bringing through some of United’s finest ever players including the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

It will be the second time that the students have hosted a fixture against a Premier League club, following the visit of the Tottenham Hotspur under 18’s squad earlier this year.

The match kicks off at 6.30pm and tickets are available in advance from the reception at the Loughborough Students Union building and online at:

Ticket prices for the standing terraced areas are £11 adults and £5.50 concessions for current students, over 65’s and under 16’s.

There will also be a limited number of seats available in the grandstand at a cost of £16.50, or £11 for members of the Loughborough Sporting Club. These tickets are only available online.

Speaking about the fixture, Stuart McLaren, Head Coach of Loughborough Students Football said:

“Everybody at the club is really excited. The fantastic facilities we have on campus and the quality of football we play is attracting the very best football institutions to come here.

“To attract Spurs here in the first place was terrific. On the back of this fixture to have a club like Manchester United interested in coming here, to play us and to provide a positive experience for their academy players, is superb.

“For the players it is so pleasing that we can provide such fixtures as part of their student experience at Loughborough. We will enjoy the occasion but also ensure we give a good account of ourselves.”

As well as being one of the biggest fixtures in the club’s history, the match will also be the occasion for the unveiling of the Mike ‘Doc’ Holliday boardroom at the Loughborough University Stadium.

As the long-time football head coach at Loughborough Mike was also a mentor for a number of Loughborough graduates who have progressed in the sport, such as Paul McGuinness who will be in attendance to manage the Manchester United Academy XI.
