Teenagers from schools across Leicestershire took part in an interactive event at Loughborough University this week as part of National School Sport Week.

Forty five pupils aged 14 to 18 from the county’s schools took part in practical workshops and sports sessions delivered by Loughborough staff, students and GB triple jumper Ricardo Twumasi.    

Workshop topics at the ‘Exploring Sport’ day included sports psychology, physical activity and health, physiology, and elite sport; sessions were designed to give pupils a taste of University life and broaden their knowledge about sports study and research. 

Pupils also got a chance to try out some new sports with taster sessions of Rock-it Ball, seated volleyball and wheelchair basketball programmed as part of the day.

Dr Keith Tolfrey from the University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, who helped coordinate the day, said: 

“This event was a great opportunity for school pupils to visit a university campus and experience what it’s like to be a student for the day.

“By taking part in sessions in our laboratories and lecture theatres, having a tour round campus, and speaking to some of our current students, they got a real sense of what they can expect at a University, and what opportunities are available to them if they choose to study sport and health.” 

Pupils attending the event were from Ashby School (Ashby-de-la-Zouch), Bosworth Academy (Leicester), Loughborough College, Our Lady’s Convent School (Loughborough), Rawlins College (Quorn), and Stonehill High School (Leicester). The event was organised by the University's Student Outreach and Recruitment team and School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
