Professor Liu received her PhD in International Economics from the University of Birmingham in 2000. She has published widely in various journals, including Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of World Business, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Management International Review, International Business Review and Management and Organization Review.
She integrates her research with teaching and has taught a variety of courses in strategic management, international business and international management in both China and the UK.

Xiaohui’s research has been funded by the ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy, and has been recognised with the Best Competitive Paper awards from the Academy of International Business (UK) and International Association for Chinese Management Research. In 2008, she organised the 19th Annual Conference of the Chinese Economic Association (UK) at Cambridge.
Her main research interests include
- Human mobility (returnee entrepreneurs), international knowledge spillovers and innovation in emerging economies.
- The internationalisation strategies of emerging economy firms
- Knowledge acquisition and firm performance.
Xiaohui is senior editor of Management and Organization Review and advisory editor of Research Policy. She currently serves on the editorial review board of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Asian Business & Management and the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies. She is general secretary of the Chinese Economic Association (UK) and a member of ESRC Peer Review College.
