Prof Ilan Oshri received his PhD in technological innovations from Warwick Business School (2003). Since then Ilan held Assistant Professor and Associate Professor positions at Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands.

Ilan was the founder of the Case Development Centre and also the co-founder of the Global Sourcing Workshop. Ilan is an Associate at the LSE Outsourcing Unit, a regular speaker at industry events and a contributor to various professional magazines.

Research Opportunities

Ilan has supervised PhD students with the intention to compile a PhD dissertation made of 3 publishable top journal articles. He takes interest in the topics described above and encourages prospective students to contact him directly.

Ilan also seek grants at the national and European level and has won £500.000 in European Commission grants under FP6 and FP7 which focused on technology transfer and the management of emergent technologies. He welcomes enquiries from both academics and practitioners taking interest to bid for grants along my line of research interests.

For the last 10 years Ilan has built a research program that brings together technology management and globalisation aspects.  The early years as an academic were devoted to understanding component sharing in both co-located and globally distributed teams. In recent years, the main stream of his work has revolved around outsourcing and offshoring of information technology and business processes. He is particularly interested in understanding how multinationals make decisions about their outsourcing and offshoring strategies, how they set up structures and mechanisms to execute outsourcing and offshoring strategies and how value and innovation is delivered under sourcing terms. Ilan uses multiple theoretical lenses to study the above including knowledge-base view of the firm and contingency theory.

One particular stream within his work on offshoring is the study of offshore captive centers. With the assistance of several research students Ilan explored captive center models, their entry strategies, their innovativeness and more recently their evolutionary path. The results of this study are summarized in one of his books: Offshoring Strategies: Evolving Captive Center Models (The MIT Press, 2011).

Ilan has also researched other aspects of globalisation, mainly in the context of globally distributed teams. With Julia Kotlarsky, Ilan studied knowledge transfer between dispersed teams and the development of social ties across distance and time zones. Together, they currently focus on understanding the interplay between coordination and learning processes in globally distributed teams, and apply multiple theoretical lenses including transactive memory.

Ilan has published eight books and numerous journal articles in leading academic journals such as Business History, European Journal of Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Information Technology, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Strategic Information Systems and many others. He also published inThe Wall Street Journal and his work was featured on BBC Radio 4, Business Week, The Economist, CIO Magazine, Computer Weekly and many other magazines. Ilan is also Senior Editor of the Journal of Information Technology.
