Since his appointment as senior lecturer in 2010 Dr Coombs has led research valued at £322K, taken on academic leadership roles in research and teaching, supervised the completion of four PhDs, with a further three nearing completion, published nine journals papers, 17 conference papers, two book chapters and one report. Dr Coombs has been organising chair and programme committee member for five international conferences and PhD examiner for two universities in the UK.

Dr Coombs has an established track record of highly significant academic leadership. He is Deputy Director for the Centre for Information Management (CIM), a university wide research centre, leads CIM’s Distinguished Speaker Programme attracting high quality stimulating speakers from industry (e.g. Yahoo, Dell, Shazam) and leads CIM’s IS/IM mid career workshop series with senior international scholars inspiring academics from Loughborough University and other leading UK universities. He is also Programme Director for BSc Information Management and Business degree and has served as: Programme Director for MSc Management; Deputy Programme Director for BSc Management Sciences; Open and Visit Day Coordinator; member of MSc Programme Re-design Committee; and School IT Strategy Committee. He has been a Fellow of the HEA since 2007 and is a member of the Association of Information Systems.

Dr Coombs’ research investigates people’s attitudes and behaviours towards information technology and, like many senior scholars in the Information Systems field, draws on the information systems and organisation studies disciplines. Particular interests include benefits realization management from information systems, the organisational impact of information systems, the treatment of organisational issues to develop successful information systems and the recruitment and retention of IT/IS professionals. Current projects include investigating the influence of IT culture on individual benefits realization capabilities (with Kayode Odusanya), a micro-practice view of benefits management activities (with Amar Joshi), and autonomy vs. control for mobile workers (with Donald Hislop).

He has authored over 40 articles in academic and professional journals and conferences including Journal of Organizational Behavior, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Information & Management, Management Learning, International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), Academy of Management (AoM), UK Association of Information Systems (UKAIS), European Conference on Knowledge Management (ECKM), European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation (ECIME) and four official reports. Dr Coombs was nominated for the prestigious Claudio Ciborra award for most innovative research paper at European Conference on Information Systems in 2013.

Dr Coombs is committed to the supervision and development of research students and plans to continue his high level of activity in this area. He has co-supervised four research students to successful completion, with three more nearing completion. He is a regular internal doctoral examiner at the SBE as well as having been external examiner at University of Salford and University of Sydney. Recent PhD research supervision topics include, career orientations in IT, benefits realization from ERP systems, an organizational sub-culture perspective on the diffusion of management information systems.
