Politics, History and International Relations

Postgraduate study

The Department of Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR) is a vibrant and convivial centre for advanced research. Postgraduate researchers work closely with specialist supervisors who undertake research in a wide range of fields.

We specialise in contemporary politics (European/EU comparative politics and democracy; political theory (especially anarchism and radical politics); in early modern and modern history (seventeenth to twentieth century British, European, international and global); international organisation and critical security studies.

We encourage interdisciplinary research and are particularly interested in receiving proposals for research in the following areas: anarchist cultural politics, British political radicalism, communications and media history, critical security studies and bio-politics of security, critical migration studies; doctrine formation in foreign policy and diplomacy, European populism, history of social theory, intellectual and cultural history, violence and imperialism.
