Huyen Le, Department of Materials, wins first place at the PhD ThinkBig competition in Sport, Health and Wellbeing held by Loughborough University.

The awards celebrated entrants in a competition that explore scientific aspects of sport, health and wellbeing and expanded the boundaries of their individual research domains.

In an effort to promote innovation and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among Doctoral Researchers, the ThinkBig competition encouraged creative thinking and problem-solving within these crucial fields.

We’re very proud of our research student, Huyen Le, for taking first place on her research on the antibiotic resistance crisis, led by Dr Nacho Martin-Fabiani.

The team are developing novel materials using nanoparticles to create surfaces that can kill bacteria before they grow and spread, offering personalised healthcare solutions. This research will offer new ways to contribute to the improvement of healthcare delivery in hospitals by preventing the transmission of diseases through improving the hygiene of frequently touched surfaces. Additionally, this will reduce the overprescription of medicine which reduces the incorrect overuse of antibiotics and will de-accelerate the antimicrobial resistance crisis.

Huyen Le comments:

I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities it has provided. This has definitely reaffirmed my belief in the power of collaboration and community.

The competition’s vision inspired us all! I’m filled with determination to continue to share our group’s work and make meaningful contributions to the environments around me.

May we continue to inspire, support and uplift one another as we embark on our research adventures.”
